About University Lake School

For nearly 60 years, University Lake School has been Lake Country’s independent school of choice for college preparation. We are a campus of rigorous academics, individual exploration and a place where students grow their confidence to achieve their personal best. You will find our faculty goes above and beyond — daily — to unlock and bring forth the brilliance that lies within each student.

Our story

University Lake School, Founded 1956

ULS was founded by a group of Lake Country parents devoted to the cause of superior education. But, the genesis of the idea came nearly a decade earlier. Waukesha County offered no nursery or kindergarten programs, so a handful of parents launched one of the area’s first nursery schools. When these parents found overcrowding and academic programs geared less toward college and more toward the needs of a rural population in their public schools, they drew on their successful experience to found an advanced co-ed, college-preparatory, independent middle and high school.

Headmaster plays with students

On September 15, 1958, University Lake School opened in temporary quarters with 45 students in grades 7 through 10. At the end of the first school year, students moved into their present and permanent home on Nagawicka Road in Hartland. As word of the school’s academic rigors and success spread, demand grew and ULS expanded to include all grades from pre-K to 12.

Today, our legacy and rich traditions continue to be celebrated by our community, with new families standing side-by-side with founding families to support the ULS mission to deliver an incomparable education.

University Lake School is situated on 180 acres of pristine woods in the Lake Country of Waukesha County. Often referred to as Hawk Hill, the ULS campus is in the midst of majestic trees and inviting prairie lands. With a multitude of nature trails, our natural environment is an effective outdoor classroom that encourages students to engage, explore and discover.
