A Letter from the Director of Advancement

On behalf of University Lake School, we urge you to consider participating in the 2010 Annual Giving Campaign. As always, your participation is more important than the size of the gift. Whether you contribute a little or a lot, your gift shows that you believe in ULS and your children's education. It takes all of us working together to fulfill the collective dreams we have for University Lake School!

Your generosity helps ensure ULS's longevity for many years to come. Whether visiting "Growing Power" as part of our all school unit on sustainability a few weeks ago in the Upper School, pulling seeds off of students' socks for collection and germination in first grade, or wading through the Oconomowoc River as part of our ongoing restoration project—these stories continue to show how effective our teachers are at bringing learning alive in our students' minds and hearts. Your gift will help to continue the innovative work our quality faculty do with students every day.

The rising costs of education make it increasingly difficult to maintain our quality programs on tuition dollars alone. The annual fund is an essential component of our school's operating budget, playing an instrumental role in supporting innovative academic initiatives and allowing ULS to continue to recruit and retain the very best teachers. We understand that today's economic environment continues to be challenging; however, every gift, regardless of the amount, truly does make a difference!!!

We hope you will join us in supporting our school. Thank you in advance for your support of the 2010 Annual Giving Campaign. Your gift will make all the difference and is deeply appreciated.

Together we can make a difference!!!

Annual Fund

Alumni and friends of University Lake School have a custom of making "a gift a year" to help support the School's current operations. Gifts received through Annual Giving have become a mainstay of the School's fiscal and academic health. The gap between the cost of educating each student and the actual per pupil tuition at University Lake School is rapidly approaching $6,000. Traditionally, the school has met this gap through the combination of charitable gifts to Annual Giving, income generated from invested endowment funds, proceeds from the Barn Sale and Spring Auction, and other miscellaneous fundraisers. As costs increase each year, the challenge to bridge the gap at ULS becomes greater.

Planned Giving

The ULS Endowment Fund was pioneered in 1983 with a $25,000 donation, and gifts from several of our first families have helped the endowment grow over time. These largely unrestricted funds continue to support the academic program, capital maintenance and improvement, as well as financial aid and scholarships.

While University Lake School is fortunate to have always had its expanded community come together to meet the needs of the school, our family of alumni, parents, and friends have never been asked to build a true endowment with a restricted principal that would safeguard ULS for generations to come.

To that end, the Legacy Fund has been established to receive restricted gifts to the ULS Endowment. Each year a portion of the annual income will be spent, but the principal will remain, grow and continue to help future generations. In that way, gifts will be appreciated in perpetuity.

Options for creative gift planning are nearly unlimited. Whether it is a planned giving gift generating income, an outright lifetime gift, or bequests – commitments today will ensure University Lake School's ability to continue to give our students the best opportunity to reach their potential.

Events

Golf Outing

The Phillip A. Treiber Memorial Open Golf Outing is held annually to benefit the Phillip A. Treiber and Daniel F. Moran '71 Scholarship Endowments. The Treiber Scholarship is awarded annually to a senior who has been a positive force at ULS, leading by example in both academics and extracurricular activities during his or her freshman, sophomore, and junior years. The tournament has been expanded through the years to memorialize ULS alumni Peter Borisch '75, and Daniel F. Moran '71. Proceeds from the tournament have funded the Peter F. Borisch Endowment for Faculty Professional Development and the Daniel F. Moran Scholarship. The Moran Scholarship, first awarded in 2000, goes to an incoming student who is new to the Upper School who displays an interest and competence in science along with good citizenship.

Spring Auction

Held every two years, the Spring Auction provides ULS community members with a wonderful opportunity to come together to support the school's mission. The evening's festivities are held at the Oconomowoc Lake Club, beginning with a silent auction, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres followed by dinner, a live auction and dancing. This year's event was a tremendous success, raising nearly $240,000 for the school.

Alumni Connections

Alumni are a valued part of the University Lake School community. Even long after students have left our campus for other ventures, we treasure our relationship with them and their commitment to ULS. We are always touched to hear the positive ways in which their years at University Lake School have shaped the lives of our former students. It is also wonderful to see the number of alumni who have chosen ULS for the education of their own children. We are fortunate to have strong continued support from the alumni community and are always ready to welcome them back home.
