Our Education Model

Our Unique Approach
to Learning

At ULS, every student is an active participant in all aspects of learning.

In addition to an array of core academic subjects, our curriculum integrates the fine arts, foreign language, technology and physical education at all grade levels.

Our incomparable 180-acre campus is the ultimate outdoor classroom, providing a safe, natural learning environment rich with opportunities for exploration.

Our child-centered approach promotes the authentic assessment of learning through student-led research, writing and presentation across the curriculum.

Our Reggio Emilia inspired philosophy celebrates the unique nature of each developmental stage.

Our college preparatory design incrementally raises the level of structure and rigor across academic divisions.

Leadership and service learning opportunities are integrated across the curriculum.

All core academic subjects emphasize applied, hands-on projects grounded in a national standards-based curriculum, resulting in deep understanding.

Lower School (Grades PK - 4)

Within the Manegold Lower School, we dedicate large learning spaces rich with hands-on learning materials and specifically designed to meet the needs of gifted learners.

Our Reggio Emilia preprimary program instills a love of learning and the joy of discovery. This philosophy extends into the elementary grades while meeting the demands of national curriculum standards.

Grades 1 through 4 provide a self-contained classroom led by a master teacher and co-teacher. This flexible learning environment easily accommodates opportunities for extended inquiry and multiple approaches.

A dedicated science, technology, engineering and math laboratory allows for learning extension beyond the classroom.

Middle School (Grades 5 - 8)

Housed in the Stackner Building, our Middle School program is designed to meet the unique sensibilities of the early adolescent.

Grades 5 and 6

Each grade is guided by two core academic teachers who direct student learning within two integrated instructional blocks, math/science and language arts/social studies.

Students remain connected to the Lower School, as shared studies classes (art, music and PE) are provided by Lower School teachers in the Manegold building.

Grades 7 and 8

Students progress to a departmentalized model where each core academic subject is taught by a different teacher, serving as a preparatory environment for Upper School.

Students develop connections with the Upper School, as shared studies classes (art, music and PE) are provided in the Upper School Fine Arts and Brumder buildings.

Individual laptops promote student-driven inquiry, documentation and presentation of knowledge.

Upper School (Grades 9 - 12)

Our college preparatory course offerings construct a liberal arts foundation for every student and include a myriad of honors and advanced placement classes across disciplines.

Each year, students are required to participate in community service, athletics and the performing fine arts.

Fall and spring intersession courses extend discovery beyond our campus and provide hands-on opportunities for learning, leadership and service.

Students use individual laptops to document and publish their learning through the development of a cumulative digital portfolio.

Our four-year college counseling program culminates in every student's acceptance to a college or university of their choice.

Leadership responsibilities include all-school assembly presentations, mentoring of younger students, and ULS summer camp counselor appointments.

College Corner

ULS is committed to helping families plan for their child's higher education. Our Upper School college counselor, Mr. Mike Dolan, provides opportunities for the entire school community (students, parents and teachers) to learn about the college search process. Each student receives individual counseling to ensure that each student has the unique benefit of a series of comprehensive, personalized consultations to further his or her search for a best 'fit' college placement.

The college planning process begins in the Middle School as students and their faculty advisors develop a challenging academic profile in preparation for the Upper School college preparatory program and ultimately college. Upper School families receive guidance about each school year's steps towards college selection and acceptance. The leadership curriculum and senior capstone project are an important part of the ULS unique college preparatory program.

The college guidance program helps each student, through classes and counseling, learn more about himself or herself as a person. Students are individually guided as they gain admission to a college that is suitably academically challenging and provides an appropriate environment for continued personal growth. The counselor works closely with families throughout the college selection and admission process and provides abundant helpful materials and resources.

Technology

The ultimate goal of a University Lake School education is to provide students with the skills they need to excel in college and beyond. We recognize that 21st Century students need to learn how to ask questions, acquire information from many sources in varied formats, think critically, and build their own knowledge base. They should be able to apply what they have learned to new situations and make thoughtful informed decisions. As members of our society and the global community, students should seek opportunities to share and learn with others. They need to master a wide range of technology tools. Towards those ends, ULS embraces computer technology as an essential element of teaching and learning.
