The Barn Sale
The Barn Sale, University Lake School's longest-standing community service event, was born in
1958 from the founding families' idea to host a rummage sale where new teachers could
purchase quality household supplies, furniture, and clothing at bargain rates. The sale
was opened to the public as well, and became an annual fall event for Lake Country
calendars; now in its 49th year, this event has evolved into Waukesha County's largest
rummage extravaganza. It is held on the first weekend in October for the purpose of
raising funds in support of annual operations - faculty salaries, classroom materials,
and scholarships. Its motto, "Character Through Service," defines its
philosophy.
The Barn Sale grounds are situated on campus at the corner of Nagawicka and Vettelson
Roads. Three separate buildings, encompassing 14,000 square feet, house over 20
departments. Among the eclectic offerings are antiques, furniture, clothing, house wares,
linens, sporting goods, toys, baby furniture, books, notions, and holiday decorations.
Used cars and boats are the highlights of a live auction scheduled for noon on Saturday.
Shoppers have the convenience of free on-site parking, baggage check, a children's carnival,
and a well-stocked food tent.
The success of the huge undertaking depends on a wide variety of quality donations suitable for
re-sale and a volunteer army of parents, alumni, students, faculty, administration, and friends.
All merchandise is carefully screened by a hardy team of volunteers between late May and the sale
weekend. Whatever is not sold is donated to charity.
The Barn Sale will be held on October 3, 4 and 5, 2008. Hours and admission prices are: Friday, October 3, 1pm - 5pm,
$3; Saturday, October 4, 8:30am - 4pm, $2; and Sunday, October 5, 10am - 1pm, $1. VIP Passes (only 500 available) may be
purchased at the Barn on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am - noon, at the School's administrative office daily from 8:00am
- 3:30pm, or by sending a check and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the School. The cost of the VIP Pass is $10 and
entitles you to 3-day priority admission, one hour early admission and shopping on Friday, and 30 minutes early admission
and shopping on Saturday. For further information, contact Val Warshauer. vwarshauer@universitylake.org
