Lower School
~~~ PK3 through 5th Grade
University Lake School's Lower School is a community of motivated PK three year old kindergarten
through fifth grade students. It is an atmosphere comprised of dedicated, nurturing
faculty and staff, as well as caring parents. Our Lower School initiates and sustains
an efficient, challenging and effective academic foundation for our younger students.
The innovative curriculum offered at the Lower School is based on interactive learning
at all levels. Our students thrive in smaller classes and group settings which allow for ongoing
individual attention. The fundamentals of reading, writing, math, science and social studies
are introduced at the junior kindergarten and kindergarten levels. We have developed and
implemented interdisciplinary units encouraging our students to be active participants in their
learning. Spanish, music, art and physical education are offered to our students beginning at
the junior kindergarten level. Our Lower School guidance counselor instructs friendship skills,
leadership skills and other developmentally appropriate life lessons. We currently have three reading specialists, who are also
teachers, providing one-on-one attention to those students requiring more individualized
attention.
The Lower School provides our gifted students with a supportive and challenging program using a
variety of approaches within the classroom setting. We meet these programming needs utilizing
ability grouping, typically in reading and math, a differentiated curriculum, compression of a unit
of study, enrichment programs, open-ended assignments and projects, as well as out of class
programming or independent study.
University Lake School provides extra curricular opportunities including before and after school
care, through the YMCA, drama, newspaper, Lake Country Children's Choir, Waukesha Youth Orchestra,
Scouts, dance, gardening club, and other activities!
Middle School
~~~ 6th through 8th Grade
Challenge, Engagement and Character Development define the themes of University Lake
School's Middle School. We provide our students, grades six through eight, with a sound, pre-college preparatory
curriculum featuring extensive reading, writing, science, mathematics and foreign language
everyday. In addition to traditional academics, all Middle School students have access to
technology through our laptop program as well as broad-based experiences in athletics and
fine and performing arts.
Middle School students are engaged in hands-on, active learning in all aspects of their studies.
Our small class sizes enable teachers to provide students the opportunity for guided independent
exploration in a setting where they are safe and feel secure.

Middle School Continued...
We believe that character development in the Middle School is extremely important because,
as young adolescents, Middle School students are defining their self-image. Through our
strong leadership program and fair, consistent system of discipline, we educate our students
that issues of character are critical and poor citizenship is not tolerated. Community service
within ULS, as well as the greater community, is expected of all our students.

Upper School
~~~ 9th through 12th Grade
Our mission is to be a premier college preparatory school that promotes student
participation in challenging programs of academics, arts and athletics. We inspire
enduring intellectual curiosity, creativity, original thinking, leadership and a
strong sense of community.
The strength of the Upper School program is demonstrated through the 100 percent college
acceptance of our graduates, our 9:1 student/teacher ratio, our knowledgeable and qualified
instructors, and our consistently high ACT and SAT scores. A solid academic curriculum
consists of arts, athletics, and technology, as well as opportunities in extracurricular and
leadership activities. Advanced Placement and Honors opportunities in most disciplines allows
for enrichment and acceleration.
We challenge every Upper School student to stretch his or her cognitive ability by encouraging
exploration of the meaning behind the facts. ULS strives to produce Upper School graduates who
can read for understanding, write and speak with clarity, think independently and solve problems
creatively.
ULS was the first school in the Midwest to offer wireless technology. We have taken a leadership
position in this digital initiative based on the powerful impact it has had on student learning
and the expectations of highly selective colleges and universities. Upper School students are
prepared for the rigors and requirements of college academics by using technology to make
multi-media presentations, to download assignments and submit homework via the Web, to research
topics for assignments, and to complete science and math simulations.
The Upper School provides students with an education that not only prepares them for success in
college, but enables them to adapt to the complexities and fast-paced changes of our modern world.
